Dr. Shaheen Kanthawala is an associate professor in the Department of Journalism & Creative Media at the University of Alabama. In her role as the Technology, Culture, and Society initiative director, Dr. Kanthawala develops collaborations with colleagues across the college, university, and the field at large, to advance research that explores the cyclical impacts of technology and its users. As a media technology scholar, her research lies at the intersection of media technology, health communication, and information studies, centering users as both consumers, and creators of content. 

As a mixed-methods scholar, her work employs a wide variety of methodological approaches that explore behaviors and impacts of the media ecosystem they exist within. Her research can be found in top-tier journals including New Media & Society, Mobile Media & Communication, Journal of Medical Internet Research, and Social Media + Society, and conference proceedings including the ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAccT), the ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW), and the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS).
